If you are separating in Alberta, one of the first questions is simple: what will be shared, and what might stay mine?
This free worksheet gives you a rough starting picture based on the general rules in Alberta’s Family Property Act. List your main assets and debts, tell us how each was acquired, and the worksheet sorts them into likely shared and possibly exempt.
It is a starting point for a conversation, not an answer. Valuation, tracing, tax and the facts of your relationship can change the result significantly, especially where a business or significant investments are involved.
Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere. For a fuller picture, see our pages on property division and high-asset divorce, or download our Business Owner’s Divorce Checklist.
Add each item once, with your best estimate of today’s value. Choose whose name it is in (or who is claiming it as exempt). For anything owned before the relationship, inherited, or received as a gift from someone other than your partner, also enter its value when the relationship began or when it was received.
| Item | Type | How it was acquired | Whose | Value today ($) | Value at start / when received ($) |
|---|
Tips: Enter debts as positive amounts and choose the type Debt. The “Value at start” box opens when you choose Owned before the relationship began, Inheritance, Gift or Damages/insurance. A family home owned before the relationship is often treated differently in practice, so get advice on your situation.
How this is estimated: joint items are split evenly between you. Property acquired during the relationship counts as shareable. For property owned before the relationship, inheritances and third-party gifts, the starting value is shown as possibly exempt and any increase counts as shareable. The equalization estimate is the payment that would leave each of you with an equal share of the shareable amount. Registered assets (RRSPs, pensions, LIRAs) are shown separately because they are pre-tax money and are usually divided by tax-free transfer rather than cash.
Important: This worksheet is a general educational tool based on the starting points in Alberta’s Family Property Act. It is not legal advice and not a prediction of what a court would order. Real outcomes depend on evidence, valuation dates, tracing, tax, debts, agreements, and the court’s power to divide property unequally where an equal split would be unjust. RESPs are often set aside for the children. Nothing you enter is saved or sent to us. Please speak with a lawyer about your situation.

I called Bellagio looking for someone to assist in the creation of a family trust. The reception could do with more training, but owner Violeta (hope I spelled that correctly) took the time to call me back very quickly and address my request. She sounds genuinely concerned about ensuring everyone that calls is treated well.Posted on Google![]()

Equal division is the general starting point for property acquired during the relationship, but a court can divide property differently where an equal division would be unjust. Exempt property is treated differently.
Examples include property owned before the relationship began, inheritances, gifts from third parties, and certain damages awards and insurance proceeds. The exemption generally covers the value at the start of the relationship or when received, and the person claiming it must prove it.
Generally, yes. Growth in the value of exempt property during the relationship is usually shared, unless it would be unjust to do so.
Yes. Choose the type Debt and enter the amount as a positive number. Debts are considered when dividing family property.
The Family Property Act applies to married spouses and to adult interdependent partners. Whether you are adult interdependent partners depends on your circumstances, such as living together for three years or having a child together.
Rather than splitting every asset in half, property is often divided by letting each person keep certain assets and having one person pay the other an amount that evens things out. The worksheet estimates that payment based on what you enter. Registered assets such as RRSPs are usually divided by tax-free transfer instead of cash.
A worksheet can only go so far. We can review your situation and explain what is likely to be shared, what may be protected, and what evidence you will need.
